A long time practice of mine has been to hide a word or a small item in a mixed media sculpture to transform it into a modern reliquary. When I saw Gale’s new wood reliquaries I fell in love with them. The gothic shapes, arches and scrolls that she fashions are beautiful.
The windows and doors which Gale sees on her trips to England are brought into the whimsy shop in the form of images and now reliquaries. The Gothique02 Med is one of my favorites and is inspired by the windows Gale photographs in England.
The Princess in the Window is made with Whimsy images, glass stones, pearls, a drawer pull and a skeleton key.
Method
- Paint the surface of the wood with gold spray paint. Allow the gold paint to dry and over spray with a coat of black spray paint. For the grunge surface, cut back the black with sandpaper to reveal areas of gold and wood underneath.
- Glue large glass stones behind the three Quatrefoil windows and assemble the window and box.
- Assemble the collage using whimsy images. See the list below for the ones I used. Before attaching the collage, punch two holes into the back of the box part of the window and insert wire to make it a hanging piece. I used a combination of glue and 3D raised dots to attach collaged pieces together.
- Glue brass beads and pearls to the edges of the outer window.
- Glue on a drawer pull or found metal piece at the bottom of the box. I found a drawer pull to fit perfectly over one of Gale’s Fancy wheels and glued them together at the bottom. This pull had room for two glass cabochons where the screws would normally go.
- Add glitter (I used Stickles), rhinestones and cabochons to the assemblage and an appendage made of pearls to hold the key.
